Russell Crowe’s Finest Performances In Years Past

April 2nd, 2011 Guest Author No comments

Let’s talk about one of the most popular actors in the movie industry: Russell Crowe. Sure he has had his fair share of legal issues and is known to have quite the temper, but you cannot deny the talent this man has when put on the silver screen. I think Crowe is one of the better actors out there, and the movie industry is a better place for having him around.

This article will discuss what I consider to be the top five Russell Crowe movies.

I went into The Insider not knowing what to expect, and boy was I surprised. This movie was simply fantastic. This film was directed by the very talented Michael Mann and also stars the legendary Al Pacino.

Another great film that starred Russell Crowe is 3:10 To Yuma. This is a modern day take on a Western film and has an all star cast consisting of Crowe, Christian Bale, and the wildly underrated Ben Foster. If you are looking for a good Western with some familiar faces, this is a great choice.

Of course, it goes without saying that any list of Russell Crowe films would have to include Gladiator. This is easily my favorite film of his, and with good reason. It came as little surprise that this film won the Academy Award for Best Picture of the Year.

It is tough to make a list of the greatest films of Russell Crowe without giving praise to his performance of John Nash in A Beautiful Mind. I could not believe he did not win the Academy Award for Best Actor In A Leading Role for this film, but after wining it the previous year for Gladiator, I guess it makes sense.

One other movie that I feel is worth mentioning is Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. This movie is a little slow at times, but when the action is taking place on seas, it gets very intense, very fast.

Hopefully there is at least one film on this list of Russell Crowe movies which you have not yet seen.

The Most Memorable Scorsese Directed Movies Of All Time

April 2nd, 2011 Guest Author No comments

When discussing the greatest directors of all time, one person who is absolutely near the top of the list is Martin Scorsese. For decades, Scorsese has been churning out classic films and I don’t think he’s ever had a bad movie. It is truly remarkable that such a legend did not win his first Academy Award for Best Director until The Departed.

But which of Scorsese’s great movies have been his best? Here are my personal top five favorites.

It is tough to make a list of Martin Scorsese movies without giving praise to Taxi Driver. I saw this film for the first time in a film class at college, and I absolutely loved it. Both Robert De Niro and Jodie Foster were excellent in this movie.

Gangs Of New York was not a film that I immediately wanted to see. It was only after I heard so many positive things about this DiCaprio and Scorsese collaboration that I decided to see it. Daniel Day Lewis was spectacular as Bill the Butcher.

One Martin Scorsese movie that I absolutely loved was Goodfellas. This movie often gets thrown around in the discussion with The Godfather Saga as the best mafia movie of all time. The crazy thing is, Goodfellas is based on a true story.

One movie that definitely makes the cut for me is The Departed. Few people realize that this movie was actually a remake of a Japanese classic, but in the end, it doesn’t really matter. This movie was absolutely incredible and deserved to win the Oscar for Best Picture award.

Finally, I have to give mention to Casino. People go back and forth about which film is better, Casino or Goodfellas. In the end, it is a matter of personal preference, and my favorite of these two is Casino.

Hopefully you found one or films on this epic list that you have yet to view.

Mel Gibson’s Most Impressive Acting Performances In Recent Memory

March 29th, 2011 Guest Author No comments

Regardless of how we feel about the guy, Mel Gibson is one actor who has had his fair share of incredible movies. Whether those movies will have the same replay value remains to be seen. I have personally not tried to watch a Mel Gibson movie in quite some time. But regardless, up until recently, I would have to consider him to be one of my favorite actors.

The following films are my top five favorites that star or feature Mel Gibson.

Going back to 1979, one film that definitely should be included is Mad Max. This was one of the films that helped establish Mel Gibson as an acting force to be reckoned with, playing the iconic role of Mad Max Rockatansky.

Without question, Braveheart is my favorite film that Mel Gibson has starred in. Talk about a movie that cleaned up at the Academy Awards. Mel Gibson won Best Director for this film and it came as no surprise that it won the 1996 Academy Award for Best Picture of the Year.

Another movie that I am not ashamed to admit I liked was What Women Want. This movie had the makings of a romantic comedy, but it was rated R so I had faith. It is actually a pretty enjoyable movie, and a very funny concept.

It goes without saying that one of the Lethal Weapon movies must be mentioned here. To me, they are all great, but i thought the best one was Lethal Weapon Four. There is one fight scene in this movie between Mel and Jet Li that is just wild.

One other great movie that deserves to be included on this list is The Patriot. I was skeptical when this movie came out, because I feared it would be too similar to Braveheart. While there are similarities, The Patriot was its own movie and I really liked it.

As you can see, regardless of what Mel Gibson has said or done recently, he has had his fair share of great movies.

Quentin Tarantino’s Finest Movies In Throughout His Career

March 28th, 2011 Guest Author No comments

Few directors have such a distinct style that you can tell a movie is theirs without any previous knowledge. In my opinion, one of those directors is Quentin Tarantino. Tarantino manages to showcase his personality and unique sense of storytelling in any movie he is associated with. His is one of the true auteurs of his generation, and the movie business is better for having him around.

But which of Tarantino’s films can be considered his best? The following films are what I consider to be his best.

No list of Tarantino films would be complete without giving mention to Reservoir Dogs, which was the breakout film for this iconic director. This film was done on a severely limited budget, but with a star cast including Harvey Keitel, Steve Buscemi, and Michael Madsen, you might not realize that.

The story of the “The Bride”, or Kill Bill as it is better known, has to be one of his best films. In my opinion Kill Bill: Volume 2 was the stronger film, just because it struck a better balance between fight scenes and story lines. Both movies are awesome though.

It is tough to make a list of Quentin Tarantino directed or written films without mentioning the Mecca of his movies, Pulp Fiction. This is easily one of my favorite movies of all time and it is amazing it didn’t win an Academy Award for Best Picture. That’s what happens when you go up against Forrest Gump and The Shawshank Redemption in the same year.

One film of Tarantino’s that does not get enough love is Jackie Brown. This is an excellently executed script featuring a star studded cast including Pam Grier, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Keaton, Robert De Niro, Chris Tucker and Bridget Fonda.

One other film that I absolutely loved was Inglorious Basterds. My girlfriend does not like many movies, but this one won her over. That is a good benchmark for me in knowing a film is great!

These are just some of my favorite movies of Quentin Tarantino, however in my opinion all his movies are great and worth seeing.

The Greatest Jeff Bridges Movies Throughout The Years

March 26th, 2011 Guest Author No comments

In my opinion, one of the most likable actors in Hollywood is Jeff Bridges. I mean seriously, could Bridges have asked for a better reception when he finally won his first Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role? It was an incredible thing to watch, and he definitely appeared to not take it for granted. A truly incredible actor and person.

But which Jeff Bridges films have been the best? Here are my personal favorites.

The first movie on this list that I will discuss is Fearless. People often get this film confused with the Jet Li epic, but this movie is completely different. Bridges’ Fearless came out in 1993 and was directed by Peter Weir.

Another fantastic film that stars Jeff Bridges is Arlington Road. Talk about a suspenseful movie. This film also stars Tim Robbins in what has to be his creepiest role. I love Tim Robbins, and this film almost ruined my opinion of him.

Another movie that I would definitely include on this list is Tron. This is one of the founding fathers of both science fiction and special effects driven movies, and I cannot wait to see what Tron 2 will look like in 3D. The sequel will also star Bridges.

Of all the movies that Bridges has starred in, in no movie was his performance as impressive as in Crazy Heart. If you put any other actor in this film, it probably would have been overlooked; Bridges managed to make this movie into his personal masterpiece, culminating in an Academy Award.

To not put The Big Lebowski on this list would be a shame. This film has become such a cult classic that bowling leagues across the country have sprouted up in its honor. This is definitely one of the better comedies of the nineties.

Hopefully there is at least one movie on this list of Jeff Bridges films that you have not yet viewed.

A Variety Of The Best Acting Performances From The Very Funny Performer, Robin Williams

March 25th, 2011 Guest Author No comments

This article will discuss the films and career of Robin Williams. Robin Willams got his big start on television, on the hit series Mork & Mindy from 1978 to 1982. After that, he established himself as one of the greatest comedians of his generation. He is an incredibly likable actor and has had some incredible films.

This article will take a look at some of the best Robin Williams films in his career.

One movie that undoubtedly makes the list is Mrs. Doubtfire. Who knew Robin Williams could successfully pull off the part of a female British nanny? This is a classic comedy that also stars Sally Field and Pierce Brosnan.

Another film that certainly makes the cut for me is Aladdin. Sure, this is an animated film, but it is definitely one of my favorite Disney movies of all time. Williams voices Genie, which I didn’t know until recently.

Good Will Hunting very well might be Williams’ best role of his career. In this movie, he plays a psychologist who is the only person that is able to get through to Will Hunting, a genius who has gone down the wrong path. Matt Damon stars as the title character.

Another film that I would definitely say is one of my favorites starring Robin Williams is Hook. This Steven Spielberg directed adaptation of the Peter Pan story was wildly successful and my personal favorite of its kind. Dustin Hoffman is also great in this film as Captain Hook.

The final film that I will discuss is The Birdcage. This movie plays out like a theatrical performance, which very well might have been their intention. It is hilarious and Williams is fantastic as the part of Armand Goldman.

Hopefully there are one or more films from Robin Williams on this list which you have not yet seen.

The Greatest Matt Damon Films Of His Career

March 25th, 2011 Guest Author No comments

This article will focus on the films of Matt Damon. Damon is a native of Boston, Massachusetts and has been starring in great movies since the early 1990s. At such an early stage of his career, it is amazing that he has already won an Oscar. What is even more amazing is that it wasn’t for acting. I have no doubts that one of those awards will come his way soon enough.

The following films are what I consider to be the greatest movies starring or featuring Matt Damon in a leading or supporting role.

The first movie on this list that I will mention is The Talented Mr. Ripley. Matt Damon stars as the title character that is sent on a mission to bring back a spoiled rich boy, played by Jude Law. This movie is better than I make it sound.

One movie that has to be on any Matt Damon best-of list is Good Will Hunting. This is the movie that exposed Damon to the nation, and what a great movie to get the job done. This is a fantastic movie and a great one to watch with a teenage son or daughter.

Another film that definitely makes the list for me is Ocean’s Eleven. I didn’t enjoy Ocean’s Twelve and Ocean’s Thirteen as much as the first, but the first one was fantastic. This was a well executed story.

One film that certainly makes the list for me is The Bourne Identity. This first film in the now trilogy of Bourne movies sets the pace for the saga. Although Jason Bourne cannot remember what happened to him in this movie, he knows he can kick some butt.

The last movie that I will mention on this list is The Departed. This is easily one of the best movies of the past decade and Damon was a big part of the reason why. Both Damon and Leonardo DiCaprio are fantastic in this movie.

Hopefully there are one or more films starring Matt Damon on this list that you have not yet seen.

Vince Vaughn’s Best Roles In Years Past

March 25th, 2011 Guest Author No comments

There is no question that one of the leading actors in the comedy genre these days is Vince Vaughn. The big guy has been starring in some of the best comedies in recent memory, and shows no signs of slowing down. Only movie audiences will decide when they have had enough of Vince Vaughn, and that doesn’t seem to be happening any time soon.

Let’s take a look at some of the best movies that have starred or featured Vince Vaughn.

While he was not the star, Anchorman was such a funny movie that it simply has to be mentioned. The stand off scene in this movie has so many cameos, it is absolutely ridiculous. Vaughn is just one of many.

Another film that definitely has to be included on this list is Wedding Crashers. Wedding Crashers is easily one of my five favorite comedies in the past ten years or so. Vaughn and Owen Wilson are quite the tandem in this film.

No list of Vince Vaughn films would be complete without mentioning Into The Wild. A little known fact about this movie is that another great actor, Sean Penn, actually directed it. Another great fact about this movie is that Eddie Vedder, the lead singer of Pearl Jam, wrote most, if not all, of the songs on the soundtrack.

Another movie that I have to include on this list is Zoolander. This movie is an absolute classic, and probably my favorite Ben Stiller film of all. Vince Vaughn has a small part in this movie, as Derek Zoolander’s brother.

The last movie I will include on this list is the movie that, in my opinion, helped establish Vince Vaughn as we know and love him. Of course, I am talking about Swingers. Enough said.

As it stands, these are my favorite movies starring (or featuring) Vince Vaughn. I can’t wait for Old School 2!

The Best Sean Penn Performances Up To This Point

March 19th, 2011 Guest Author No comments

One actor who has been a dominant force on the awards front in recent years is Sean Penn. It seems that almost any time Penn stars in a film, he is likely to be nominated for an Academy Award. I’m not sure if there is bias toward this actor or if he is just that good.

But which of his films have been his best. The following movies features some of the best Sean Penn roles.

It is tough to make a list of Sean Penn films without giving mention to the movie that won him his most recent Academy Award for Best Actor In A Leading Role. That movie was of course, Milk, in which Penn depicted the openly homosexual politician Harvey Milk.

One other great movie starring Sean Penn that I would like to discuss is Mystic River. As far as movies taking place in Boston go, this is one of the best ones out there. With an all star cast and legendary director Clint Eastwood behind the helm, it came as no surprise that this movie was amazing.

One other fantastic film starring Penn was Dead Man Walking. This movie is about a nun who empathizes with both a convicted death row killer and the family of his victim.

Another great movie that is worthy of mentioning is Carlito’s Way. Penn plays David Kleinfeld, a friend and lawyer of Carlito, who of course is played by Al Pacino. This film didn’t quite recapture the magic that Scarface had, but it came pretty close.

I don’t think The Thin Red Line gets enough love. This is as gripping as war thrillers get, and while it was not in the same league as the other war film greats, it is still a very entertaining movie.

Is there a film that you like that I may have missed? I’m not surprised, as this was a difficult list to make and I had to make the cutoff somewhere.

A Few Of The Most Memorable Movies From The Incredibly Interesting Actor, George Clooney

March 16th, 2011 Guest Author No comments

George Clooney has risen to become one of the most popular and powerful actors in all of the movie industry. The guy is truly an anomaly and the mystique behind his private life helps make him even more likable. What is most important, however, is the fact that he is a very talented actor.

This article will discuss what I consider to be George Clooney’s greatest films up to this point in his career.

Three Kings is one movie that I will definitely include on this list. This film was released in 1999 and directed by the very talented director, David O. Russell. What starts as a mission to steal gold after the Gulf War turns into something much more serious.

It is tough to make a list of George Clooney movies without giving praise to the Danny Ocean franchise. There is no question that of the three films, the first film, Ocean’s Eleven was the best. This is often the case with trilogies.

Up In The Air was another movie that I absolutely loved. In this film, Clooney plays a man constantly on the go, who fires people for a living. Jason Reitman, the director of Thank You For Smoking, directed this film. This movie also happens to star Vera Farmiga (The Departed) and Anna Kendrick.

Any list of Clooney films has to include The Fantastic Mr. Fox. Sure, this is an animated picture, but that does not take away from it being a great film from one of the most talented directors working today, Mr. Wes Anderson.

One other great movie that makes this list is Michael Clayton. This film is one of the best performances from George Clooney in his career. Clooney is nothing short of brilliant in this thriller that received several Oscar nominations.

As it stands, this is my all time list of the best George Clooney movies.
